What does your usual day look like?

I am fairly strict with the first couple of hours of my day. I use airplane mode on my phone overnight and usually wait until 9.00am to switch it off. I have found by doing this my brain doesn’t go into reactive mode and mindless scrolling immediately after waking up.

I will have a light breakfast and then go for a quick walk first thing and depending on where I am, have a coffee and listen to a podcast episode. My go to is anything by Monocle, but particularly their Entrepreneur series where they interview different founders and startups.

The nature of working in PR is that it is not a 9-5 job, but I have learnt over the years to roll with that and design my working day and week accordingly.

I am always on alert for media requests throughout the day for my clients and these have to be responded to promptly. I do most of my strategic work in the morning looking at plans for clients and making sure we are on track. I use WhatsApp a lot for check-ins and rely on them communicating to me what is happening in their business that week as I am always looking for fresh stories and angles to pitch.

Afternoons are spent checking out what industry events are happening, having calls with my network and catching up on the news whether that’s magazines, podcasts or industry blogs.

Self-care is super important to me so I make sure I am eating well throughout the day, getting into nature if I can and also taking some exercise. I am currently in Paris and loving using the Class Pass app so I can try out new classes and studios. There is one studio that has great yoga and pilates classes I love: Poses Studio.

What are the things you like the most about your job?

The pace and the variety. No two days are the same.

I specialise in working with hotels, wellness and lifestyle brands. I particularly love the hospitality industry as it is fast moving and innovative and I love that there are always new, interesting properties and concepts launching.

I also enjoy working in the media world and seeing something I am working on like a magazine feature come to fruition. I like pitching, coming up with new ideas and stories to promote a client and the sense of satisfaction that comes from helping them to get their brand into the world.

What are some of the skills you utilise the most in your day-to-day?

Research, time management, creativity and also a lot of resilience!

What was one of your happiest days in your career and why?

I think becoming self-employed. It was something I wanted to do for a while but when it finally happened and I realised it was the right move it was a great feeling.

What has been your greatest challenge on your career path and how did you overcome it?

Navigating the ever-changing media landscape and adapting to this in terms of what a client needs and wants. The PR industry has shifted a great deal since I started out and as with any industry you have to stay ahead of the curve. As a self employed consultant making sure that this knowledge is passed on to my clients is important so they can make the impact they desire.

What is something you had to learn to become better at your job?

I would say creating the perfect pitch that gets noticed by a journalist is a skill you are constantly honing as a PR.

How did you get to become a Public Relations Consultant?

I studied marketing and wanted to work in fashion but then ended up in restaurant PR which led me into the hotel world. After a number of years working for agencies and in house as a marketing director for a luxury hotel group, I set up my own business.

What are the top three pieces of advice you would give to other women aiming to achieve long-term success in their careers?

  1. Know what your BIG goal is and reverse engineer from there with manageable steps.

  2. Nothing is impossible and is it important to be bold in your approach.

  3. Remember you can always course correct if you need to. Being agile is important.

Professional networking for women matters because…

For me I get a lot of inspiration from other people and what they are doing. I think networking helps us to grow personally and professionally because other people drive us forwards through connection, support and learning new ways of doing things.

What makes you gracefullyBOLD?

I don’t give up even on days when it feels tough!

How do you deal with stress and build resilience?

For me it is about having a great wellness routine that supports you and also being kind to yourself. Stress is unavoidable but really nothing is worth losing sleep over.

What would have been your alternative career path?

An interior designer, because I love architecture and design and the process of bringing a project to life.

What strategies or practices have you found most effective in building and maintaining confidence in your professional life, especially during challenging times?

Self-care, especially mindset work.

Meditation is great for building mental resilience and also inner confidence when times are tough. My advice is to find anything that works for you and helps you to switch off and decompress.

Sometimes just going for a long walk and clearing your mind can help you to come back to your desk stronger and ready to tackle a challenge.

Who is a (female) professional that inspired you along your career journey and why?

A female professional who inspired me was a former colleague who really helped to shape my career when I was working in house for a hotel brand. I worked closely alongside her and she was very experienced in her field as a marketing and brand consultant. I still think about our time working together now as my career has developed.

What’s the one question we didn’t ask you, but you’d like to answer?

Question: How has remote working benefitted you personally and professionally?

Answer: It has made me more creative being exposed to different environments and cultures. It has allowed me to grow my network and meet many different people. It has also developed my self confidence and ability to push myself out of my comfort zone
